How to choose your maternity photoshoot style

Choose the direction before you choose the dress. Style decides the lighting, the wardrobe, the posing and the mood of the whole gallery, and almost every other decision follows from it.

Most sessions at Natalie Vell Studio move between four directions: soft, dramatic, editorial and minimalist. You do not have to commit to only one — a longer session can hold several — but knowing which one you want most is the single most useful thing you can tell me before your date.

Soft

Light, warm and gentle. Flowing fabric, open shapes, an unhurried expression. This is the direction most women picture when they first imagine maternity portraits, and it is the easiest to feel comfortable in.

Soft suits you if you want the photographs to feel tender rather than powerful, if you plan to hang one in a nursery, or if you are nervous in front of a camera and want the session to feel calm.

Dramatic

Deeper shadows, stronger contrast, a darker palette. The belly is often shaped by a single directional light rather than lit evenly, and the result feels closer to sculpture than to a portrait.

Dramatic suits you if you want to look strong rather than sweet. Black gowns, sculptural fabric and bare skin against a dark background all belong here.

Editorial

Styled the way a magazine would style it. Bolder wardrobe, more deliberate posing, color used as a statement rather than a background. Gold, red and jewel tones live in this direction.

Editorial suits you if you enjoy fashion, if you want portraits nobody would mistake for anyone else's, and if you are willing to be directed into positions that feel unusual while we are making them.

Minimalist

Almost nothing in the frame but you. A neutral background, one piece of fabric or a plain bodysuit, and light doing all of the work. Often black and white.

Minimalist suits you if you want the photographs to age well, if you dislike anything that looks staged, or if you want the belly itself to be the subject with nothing competing for attention.

How to decide

Ask yourself how you want to feel when you look at the gallery in ten years, not which photograph you liked on someone else's feed. The two rarely give the same answer.

• Tender and warm, something you would hang in the nursery — soft.
• Strong, and unmistakably you at your most confident — dramatic.
• Fashion-led, styled, a little bold — editorial.
• Quiet and timeless, nothing to date it — minimalist.

You can have more than one

The number of looks in your package decides how much range the gallery can hold. Three looks give room for one clear direction with variations. Seven allow a gallery that moves from soft to dramatic without either feeling like an afterthought.
