Four Looks, Four Completely Different Photographs

Ivory ruffles, a black hat, blush tulle or red silk. Four dresses from the studio wardrobe and what each one does to the photograph.

Most women book the session first and panic about what to wear second. That is the normal order. It is also the part I can take off your plate.

So here are four looks from the studio wardrobe. Same room, same light, four completely different photographs. Watch what the dress alone does.

One — ivory, and a train that keeps going

The softest of the four. Layers of ivory ruffle, a train long enough that we arrange it on the floor around you, and a white backdrop throwing light back from every side. It photographs gentle. If you want images that feel like early morning, this is the one.

Two — black, and a hat that does the talking

The look nobody expects to love, and then does. A fitted black gown, a wide brim hat, and a curtain of beaded fringe that we shoot straight through. It is the most graphic thing in the studio, closer to a fashion editorial than a maternity portrait.

Three — blush tulle

Off the shoulder, with sleeves that catch the air when you move. On a grey backdrop the pink stays soft instead of turning sweet. This is the look most women picture when they imagine a maternity session, and it earns the reputation.

Four — red silk, and a crown

The loudest one, and my favourite to light. Red silk, a gold crown, and enough fabric that we can throw it and catch it in the air. On a dark backdrop it stops looking like a dress and starts looking like a portrait of someone who knows exactly what she is doing.

None of this needs deciding tonight. Tell me what you actually feel like yourself in, or send me a photo of the favourite thing in your own wardrobe if that is easier, and I will have the gowns hanging and steamed before you arrive. If something is not working once we start, we change it. That is what the wardrobe is there for.

So which one would you wear: one, two, three or four?
