What makes an announcement photograph work

An announcement photograph carries one piece of information, so everything else in the frame should stay quiet. I keep the wardrobe simple, usually something from the studio wardrobe in a color that will not compete with the object in your hands, and I direct the whole session: posing, posture, hand placement, chin and expression. You do not need any modeling experience, and you do not need to arrive with a plan already written.

• A card, a folded note or the ultrasound image held between the two of you, readable in the frame but not the loudest thing in it.
• A pair of small shoes resting in your open hands, photographed close, with your faces soft behind them.
• Your older child holding the announcement while you stand behind, so the photograph is about the reaction rather than the sign.
• A quiet portrait of you alone, one hand on the belly and nothing written anywhere, with the announcement carried by the words you add later.

If you want your own face to be honest in those frames, ask someone else to seal the card, and tell me before we begin so that I am already in position. The advantage of a studio is that the light does not change between the moment before and the moment after.

Pink and blue are not obligatory. Colors behave in specific ways in this room, and it is worth choosing for the photograph rather than for the tradition. White and cream read soft and airy. Partner and children are included in the Comfort experience at $1,499 and in the Premium experience at $1,799. The Light experience at $1,099 is for you alone. Pets may be included when we discuss and approve it before the session. I have photographed individual dogs, a group of seven large dogs, an African gray parrot and a fold-eared cat, so a dog standing in a reveal photograph is familiar ground here.

Announcement and reveal photographs are usually made earlier in a pregnancy than the maternity window I recommend, which is approximately 28 to 32 weeks. If you want both, tell me at the start and we will plan them as two separate visits to the studio.
