Planning your session

Studio or outdoor maternity photography: which should you choose?

I photograph maternity sessions indoors only, at my private studio in Roseville, so I will answer plainly rather than argue both sides evenly. A studio session gives you control over the things that decide whether a photograph works: light, background, temperature and clothing. An outdoor session trades that control for landscape and open sky, and on the day it hands your plan to the weather.

That trade is the whole decision. What follows is what it means in practice, including where outdoor genuinely wins.

What the studio controls, and why it matters

The light in my studio does not change between the first frame and the last. Outdoors you work inside one narrow window of good light, and if the session runs long because you needed to sit down, the photographs made at the end will not match the ones made at the start. Indoors, the last look is as strong as the first, and there is no daylight deadline, which means there is no reason to hurry you.

The rest follows from that. The room is comfortable in July and in January. Backgrounds are chosen on purpose rather than accepted because they happened to be there. The wardrobe lives here — gowns, flowing fabrics, bodysuits, accessories, statement pieces — so you carry nothing, and you can change your mind once you see what a fabric does on camera. The studio is private and by appointment, so no one walks through your session.

What an outdoor session gains, and what it gives up

I will be fair about it. Outdoors you get a season, a sense of place, and wind moving through fabric in a way no room reproduces. For a woman who wants a photograph that says where she was living while she was pregnant, open landscape says it.

What you give up is repeatability. You get roughly one hour of kind light and whatever else the day brings: wind, heat, cold, uneven ground, strangers walking behind you. Changing looks means a car. Hair finished an hour earlier is now at the mercy of the wind. If the weather turns, the session moves, and at thirty-one weeks a moved date is not a small thing.

Pregnancy decides more of this than style does

I recommend photographing at approximately twenty-eight to thirty-two weeks, and by then your body has an opinion about how long it wants to stand. Indoors you can rest between looks without losing the light and finish the session in the same condition you started it. That is usually the difference between a woman enjoying the last twenty minutes and a woman waiting for them to end.

Every session here is fully guided. I direct posture, hand placement, the angle of your chin and your expression throughout, so no modeling experience is needed. Hair and makeup may be added to an eligible package for $399 and is included with Premium, and indoors it looks the same after two hours as it did at the start.

Indoors you choose the color instead of inheriting it

Outdoors the background sets your palette. Indoors you set it. White and cream read soft and airy here; black reads classic or dramatic depending on how I light it; red is a statement; gold suits luxury and artwork-inspired styling; earthy neutrals stay calm and timeless; jewel tones look editorial; bare skin with neutral fabric becomes minimalist fine art. Those are decisions rather than accidents, and we make them before you step in front of the camera.

How to choose your maternity photoshoot style

So which should you choose?

If the landscape itself is the subject, an outdoor session is what you want, and I would rather say so than pretend otherwise. If what you want is your face, your belly, your hands and your clothing photographed exactly as you planned them, on a day that weather cannot spoil, then the studio is the stronger choice. It is also the only kind of session I offer.

Nothing changes. The session is indoors, the light is the same in any weather, and there is no reason to reschedule. Clients travel to me from Roseville, Sacramento, the Bay Area and across Northern California, so the only weather that affects you is the weather on the drive.

They are directed, which is not the same as stiff. I guide posture, hand placement, the angle of your chin and your expression throughout the session, so the images look composed and calm. No modeling experience is needed.
